Of course the travellers from Earth aren't the only ones using the stargates and the team almost immediately encounter the formidable enemy the Goa'uld... who are in fact the origin of the gods of Egypt.
Through an amazing ten seasons the team go through the gate time and time again to different planets meeting different aliens and different challenges.
They also discover new allies (the Asguard) and new enemies (the Replicators and the Ori).
The team varied in size and scope over the years... during Season 6 the character of Daniel Jackson was replaced by Jonas Quinn. Colonel Jack O'Neill was replaced in Season 9/10 with Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell and Vala Mal Doran also joined the team (giving a total of five rather than the previous four).
The end of the TV show after ten series wasn't the end of the Stargate world, however, which lived on for a few more years in Stargate Atlantis (which had already been running for three years)... several TV movies and a another TV series, Stargate Universe.
