The show follows the lives of a group of New York FBI agents who specialise in missing persons cases.

Each week the show starts with a small slice of life of the missing person... before they vanish from the scene and the FBI are called in to trace them.

Although the show is generally episode based there have been several ongoing story arcs for the main characters over the years.
