The show follows the Administration of President Josiah Bartlett. Originally intended to be about the staffers with the President as a mostly unseen character this changed over the course of the first season.
The show managed to keep a finger on the political pulse, and fiction often closely followed reality.
The show ran for seven seasons, through the Administration of Bartlett and on to finding and electing his eventual successor.
